  Dermatomyositis is an inflammatory disease marked by muscle weakness and a distinctive skin rash. It is one of the conditions classified under inflammatory myopathies, a group of disorders that involve chronic muscle inflammation accompanied by muscle weakness.  What Causes Dermatomyositis? The exact cause of dermatomyositis is unknown, but it is believed to be related to an autoimmune reaction where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own cells and tissues. Genetic factors may also play a role in the susceptibility to the disease.  Symptoms to Look Out For The hallmark symptom of dermatomyositis is a skin rash that often precedes or accompanies muscle weakness. The rash may appear on the face, knuckles, neck, shoulders, upper chest, and back.
